Walking, talking and
understanding the
lives of young people
The Council in partnership with others has
recently started a series of 'Youth Walks'
with local young people to get a real
understanding of the challenges and
strengths that they see in their local
environment every day and, to identify
where change might be needed.
The walks began following a meeting with
a group of young people from the EPIC
Youth Forum. Armed with a large map of
the borough, the team ask young people
to pinpoint areas on the map related to
things they like and dislike about living
in the borough.
They are interested in stories, not just
feedback, to help them better understand
the situations young people face every day
as well as their ideas. At the first meeting
young people identified concerns around
anti-social behaviour and poor lighting so
the team invited colleagues from relevant
Council departments to join a walk so
they could see and hear about the
issues first hand.
Youth Walks
- next steps
As a result of the walks, several
suggestions from young people are
being taken forward. The Community
Safety team is hoping to recruit some
young people from the walks to their
Safer Neighbourhood Board which
oversees community policing. Lighting
on borough boundaries and promoting
safer well-lit routes are some
important issues being looked at. One
local community association will also be
working with young people to improve
outdoor space through volunteering.
The walks will continue in the autumn
term so if you know of a group of young
people who would be keen to be
involved, please let us know. It is hoped
that this approach will be used by other
Council services as a way of involving
young people in change and decisions.

Second Petal added to
Grenfell mosaic
The second petal has been added to the
Grenfell Memorial Community Mosaic.
Sitting at the base of the Grenfell Tower
site, the mosaic is an ongoing community
project which is being led by visual arts
organisation ACAVA and the Al-Manaar,
The Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre.
Last month (July), the first petal was
created by Latymer Community Church
and featured the word "Love", as chosen
by members of the church.
This month's petal (August) was created
by the Henry Dickens Community Centre,
who chose the word "Hope".
Every month, a new community group
will create a petal, adding a word of their
choice to the mosaic. It has been agreed
that the mosaic will remain on the
hoarding at the base of the Tower for the
duration of the project. The site team has
extended the space for further expansion
to be accommodated.
The next group to create a petal for
the mosaic is the Clementjames Centre
followed by Everyone Active at the
Westway Sports Centre in October. Credit goes to Toby Laurent-Belson
Update from the Grenfell site team
Earlier this week work started on
repositioning the site entrance on
Grenfell Road, restoring access to 12
parking bays and providing pedestrian
access to Silchester Road.
This work was completed by
Friday 31 August.
Scaffolding of the exterior of Grenfell
Tower is complete, however, work
continues inside the building.
This includes ongoing propping work
and weekly inspections of the 4,000
props and 24 levels of scaffolding.
In the coming weeks teams will be
undertaking additional works to
improve the building's protection
from wintery weather conditions.
